Martine’s Ever-Unfolding Story - The Journey Behind Riad Muarid
THE RIAD MUARID STORY
Originally from Belgium, Martine has a journey shaped by her passion for craftsmanship and the rich culture of Morocco. Attuned to the subtleties of detail, she draws inspiration from the authenticity, connections, and vibrant way of life that define this beautiful region. Having previously navigated the dynamic world of fashion, she brings a unique perspective to her riad. With a deep appreciation for the artisans and makers who bring their creations to life, she showcases the quality materials found throughout Morocco. The stunning architecture and design influenced by the surrounding landscapes of Marrakech and the Atlas Mountains further inspire her creativity, allowing her to blend elegance and tradition in every aspect of the riad.
Driven by a passion for authentic experiences, the riad was envisioned as a serene retreat nestled in a tranquil neighborhood of the ancient Marrakech medina—a space where guests can immerse themselves in the local culture and vibrant life of the region. Each detail reflects a commitment to authenticity, encouraging connection with the community and appreciation for the rich traditions that define the area. Here, guests can savor the beauty of everyday life in Marrakech, from the bustling markets to the warm hospitality of its people, all while enjoying the peaceful ambiance of their home away from home.
The Douiria: A Living Poem
The Douiria, the little annex at Riad Muarid, unfolds with the same spirit and intention found throughout Martine Maes’ work. Every line, corner, and material has been considered with care, reflecting her thoughtful and poetic approach to shaping space.
Once a place where locals welcomed family and friends, the Douiria has been completely reimagined by Martine as an intimate space for one, two, or a small family seeking connection, naturally flowing into the shared life of the riad.
Each room is mindfully and beautifully proportioned, where nothing is unnecessary and nothing is missing. Textiles soften the geometry. Light travels freely through glass. Surfaces reflect Martine’s refined eye for tone, texture, and restraint. Glass becomes architectural poetry—reflections drift as doors move, allowing light and air to pass gently through.
A subtle trace of deep Bordeaux settles in the rooms, echoing Marrakech’s understated elegance. This colour, long present in medina, textiles, and garments, anchors the Douiria in its cultural and geographical context, linking past and present, city and interior, exterior and soul. In such an intimate space, Martine shows how colour can become architecture—setting tone, rhythm, and feeling, and giving every element a sense of refinement and subtle poetry.
Inspired by the tiny house philosophy, the Douiria emphasizes intimacy, calm, and deliberate design. Materials remain honest. Every detail is beautiful, purposeful, and mindfully connected. Through Martine’s vision, the Douiria becomes more than a space—it is a home where light, texture, and intention come together, revealing the art of living lightly and beautifully.
an Ever-Unfolding Story
Martine is currently immersed in a new special architectural design project within the heart of the Marrakech medina, where she continues to draw inspiration from the city’s enchanting blend of history, culture, and modern life. This vision brings together her sophistication and the timeless beauty of Moroccan tradition, creating spaces that embody both elegance and authenticity. Each design detail is thoughtfully considered to reflect the soul of the medina and surrounding landscape, capturing its unique spirit and rich heritage.
In addition to her architectural design work, Martine’s mmu Atelier label, a true expression of her artistic journey, is now available at Riad Muarid. The collection is a celebration of craftsmanship, timeless design, and the quiet luxury that defines both the riad and its surroundings. Each piece is a carefully crafted tribute to elegance and grace, allowing guests to bring home a piece of Marrakech’s charm and beauty, woven into the fabric of Martine’s vision.
